Omega XP Laser System Wins FDA Approval for Pain Relief
Laser Therapeutics also conducts clinical trials on smoking cessation
(CENTERVILLE, Mass. - New) The Omega XP Laser System, a low-level laser that could help revolutionize the treatment of pain and smoking addiction has been awarded U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use in treating certain forms of musculoskeletal tissue pain, including tendonitis, according to Neil Camera, president of Laser Therapeutics.
Manufactured in Great Britain, the Omega XP is a non-invasive, portable therapeutic medical laser designed to deliver low-level, pulsing light energy to the target tissue. "Low-level laser therapy stimulates the cells so that the healing effect is biochemical and not thermal," said Camera, whose company is the sole distributor of the device in the United States. "This device is used widely around the world to treat pain and other conditions."
Low-level laser therapy provides many medical benefits, Camera explained. It increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and protein synthesis resulting in growth factor response within the cells and improved cell proliferation; increases endorphin release, thereby promoting pain relief; strengthens the immune system response by increasing lymphocyte activity; and it can promote acupuncture point stimulation.
The latter factor is the basis for Laser Therapeutics' clinical trials on the use of the Omega XP as a smoking cessation therapy. "Early results have shown that low-level laser therapy is many times better for smoking cessation than anything else on the market," Camera said.
In smoking cessation, the laser is used to treat certain acupuncture points in the hands and ears that stimulate the release of endorphins, thereby inhibiting craving for tobacco and reducing or eliminating the physical nicotine withdrawal symptoms. "The person gets a sense of well being," explained Camera. "It’s a biological effect that tells our body that we don't need to smoke to feel good."
While the device is FDA-approved specifically for use in treating tendonitis pain, the laser has proven effective in treating a wide range of conditions, according to an Omega Laser Systems spokesperson. Jessica Nelson, general manager of Omega Laser Systems, Ltd., said the laser has been used worldwide to help heal wounds, and to treat eczema and other skin conditions, arthritis, plantar fasciitis and musculoskeletal pain.
"We've been around for 15 years," said Nelson. "The laser is an extremely effective and well-researched form of therapy."
The more than 140 Omega Laser Systems sold in the United States are used primarily by physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists and sports medicine specialists, said Camera.
One proponent is Tahoe Forest Hospital Emergency Department Physician Director Michael MacQuarrie, M.D., F.A.C.E. P., of Truckee, Calif. He uses the Omega laser to treat everything from sprains, strains and wrist and ankle injuries to chronic pain conditions such as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, back pain and migraine headaches.
